40 Inspirational Bible Verses about Spring + Easter Devotional

40 Inspirational Bible Verses about Spring + Easter Devotional

There is no better season to teach us about hope than spring and no more beautiful way than the Easter message. Easter is the story of hope!  Enjoy 40 favorite inspirational Bible verses about spring and Easter!

I get it.  You’re tired.  I’m tired too.  In fact, it feels like the entire world is tired this year.  For the past few years now, we have encouraged one another to take things a day at a time, that things will get better, that there is still hope.  In fact, in this post, we will take a look at 40 inspirational Bible verses for spring that offer hope for the Easter season!

And yet, over the years, we have literally watched destruction, death, depression, wars, and rumors of wars…right on our own doorstep.  Not just to “other people”, but to us.  To our friends, our co-workers, our family, our community.

And yet, another Easter message rolls around, ringing ever so loudly with the message of hope and time of renewal, if only we are intentional to hear it.

As I have reflected upon the Easter message and verses about hope and the spring season over the past few weeks, a few thoughts have been resonating with my heart.  Today, on this Easter Sunday, perhaps it will inspire a little extra hope and a fresh start for you too.

40 Inspirational Bible Verses about Spring + Easter Devotional

A message of Hope.

“When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’  body.  Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”  But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.”  Mark 16:1-4

I really enjoy history and I especially love thinking about history from varied perspectives of the characters involved.  The history of that first Easter is certainly no different.  When I try to place myself in the shoes of these ladies, heartbroken friends of Jesus, the significance of the stone at the tomb seems overwhelming.

They must have been exhausted.  Grief and trauma, compounded with senselessness and unfairness…it all must have left them ever so tired.  And yet, they carried on, purchasing the spices and making the walk to just do the next thing.  Really, the only thing they knew to do to show their faithfulness to their friend, their Messiah, their Jesus, the God of hope.

When physical or mental weariness, pain, grief, or discouragement threaten to overwhelm you, just do the next thing.  The next day, the next hour, the next minute.

Dare I say, there must have been a sense of frustration, too.  In the midst of trying to do the right thing, it seemed impossible.  How on earth would they move that incredibly large, impossibly heavy stone?

The right thing can sometimes, oftentimes, feel impossible and like a heavy burden.  But it’s still the right thing.  Carry on.

Right in the middle of their frustration and weariness, they discovered the miracle.  The stone that they would never be able to move on their own had been taken care of.  The way had been made.  The impossible happened.

“As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.  “Don’t be alarmed,” he said.  “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified.  He has risen!  He is not here!”

The miracle usually isn’t in the obvious or expected.  Hope doesn’t follow a common path.

The very large, very heavy stone you’re facing probably won’t be moved in the way you expect.  I don’t know what that stone is: physical concerns, broken relationships, financial burdens, challenges at work, loss, grief, anger, fear…you name it.  And if there is no heavy stone in your path right now, life will make sure one appears at some point.  It is the nature of the fallen world we live in here on Earth.

I don’t know when, nor how, that stone that looms large, right in the middle of your path, will be moved.

But history…the Easter message…teaches us to hope, regardless of how heavy or large the stone may be.

It’s not yours or mine to move.

This Easter, can we recognize the impossibility of moving the stone ourselves and leave the impossible up to God?

Can we recognize that all of these human emotions are real, and yet, hope conquers all?

The great and amazing love and grace of God carries all the hope for all humanity, and that includes you and me too.

The message of Easter is a season of renewal, of hope.

People who have it all together and aren’t beaten down, tired, and worn from life aren’t searching for hope.  But if, this Easter, you find yourself feeling a bit tired from the heaviness of the world, then know that the Easter message is for you.

“For in this hope we are saved.  But hope that is seen is no hope at all.  Who hopes for what they already have?”  Romans 8:24

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world you will have trouble.  But take heart!  I have overcome the world.”  John 16:33

As you look toward the spring season, Easter, and possibly even new beginnings, I hope these spring Bible verses from God’s Word will be close to your heart.  This Easter, I wish you a Hopeful Easter.. Because that really is the big message of Easter for each and every one of us.  When we recognize that the stone isn’t ours to roll away and He is working in the seemingly impossible, we can rest.  In that hope, we can find joy and peace that pass all understanding.

From our family to yours, Happy Easter!  We will celebrate with all of the fun traditions, time with family, special church services, new outfits for the kids, candy tucked in eggs…all the while remembering the reason for Easter: Hope.

Notes From the Nest

Notes From the Nest

Happy Sunday!

When I say this week was a whirlwind, I actually mean it.  I really look forward to a Notes From the Nest post soon that doesn’t start with “what a crazy week.” Haha!  It will happen…soon.  We are getting ready to start our first regular week of school with typical routines and schedules.  Even though summer is wonderful, getting back into a regular swing of things sounds pretty good right now too!

Random notes from our nest:

  • The 2023 school year has begun!  Our oldest is in 10th grade, our middle daughter is in 7th grade, and my “baby” is in 4th grade!  I am starting my 19th year in the classroom…time flies!  Everyone had a great first day, even though we are missing sleeping in on the summer mornings!  Haha!
  • If you see me decorating for fall anytime soon, know I am just channeling or wishing some cooler weather.  We’ve had extreme heat advisories this week.  When those roll around for Florida, you know it’s bad!  Yikes!
  • Actually, I haven’t had time for decorating with back to school this week.  However, the coastal elements are packed up and the house is pretty clean.  That’s a win enough for me this week!
  • I have the most adorable little class at school this year.  They are so little and sweet and I can already tell it’s going to be a super cute school year.  Such a blessing!

Around the blog this week:

Over on the blog this week, I shared the final reveal of our drop zone area for the kids’ backpacks and school items.  Not only is it a “how to” post, but I also tried to share some tips and thoughts for how you can take underutilized spaces in your home and turn them into functional and even beautiful organization and storage.

You can read all of the details HERE!

I also shared our family’s favorite EASY crockpot family recipes on THIS blog post!  These are items I keep on hand for quick, easy, simple, and delicious family dinners!

Around the ‘gram this week:

Instagram was a little quiet this week due to our back to school schedule and trying to get back into routine.  However, I had fun sharing when I could!

  • Tour of my classroom in Instagram stories
  • Some of my favorite organizational and storage items I am enjoying around our home
  • Final reveal of our new drop zone area for the kids’ backpacks and school items.  I am SO excited with how it all turned out and the kids are doing a great job of using it well.  Hopefully THIS reel gives you some organizational inspiration too!

Around my storefront this week:

There have been some awesome deals!  Hopefully you follow along on my storefront.  Everyday, I update my “Favorite Daily Deals” idea list with some of my favorite deals.  Many of these are ones that are not really pushed out on the main deals pages, so you’ll want to check each day for those!  You can find them HERE!

Here are the top favorites and sellers from this week:

  1. This table runner is one of my very favorites and I have it in a couple of colors now.  It’s so easy to style and looks pretty on its own or even layered with other table linens.  You can’t beat the price and it comes in several different colors!  Shop it HERE!
  2. This gorgeous and SUPER realistic greenery stem is in the top sellers for the 3rd week in a row!  I love using mine for late fall, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and through the winter also.  It is so easy to style and decorate.  Just stick 3 in a pretty vessel together and you’ll have people touching it in person to see if it’s real or not!  Shop it HERE!
  3. These stunning and really high-end looking pillow covers are going to be ALL over our nest this fall and winter.  I absolutely love them and my kids can’t stop petting them.  Haha!  Seriously, they are just amazing.  After seeing some similar ones in a boutique for $200 each, I started researching.  I’m happy to have found THESE for a fraction of the cost and they are just as amazing!
  4. This spinning organizer is wonderful.  My girls have one in their bathroom and it works perfectly for keeping toiletries, makeup, and supplies organized and easy to access.  It would also be awesome in an office space for organizing supplies!  It’s been on sale for a great price this week too.  Shop it HERE!
  5. My favorite blanket has been on sale and it was a big hit again with you all this week.  It’s not the first time this has been on the top seller list and for good reason.  It is the coziest!  The gauzy cotton is breathable, super soft, and so comfy.  It is also available in quite a few colors!  Shop it HERE!

Notes From the Nest

Notes From the Nest

Well, this past week definitely flew by in a flash!  Why is it that the closer we get to the start of school, the weeks roll by even more quickly?  Only 3 weeks to go and while we love our school and I love teaching, I’m just not quite ready yet.  Anyone out there in the same boat?!

It has been a great week though, despite the crazy hot weather!

Random Notes from our Nest

  1. The most exciting thing around our nest this week is that our oldest, Payton, is in Honduras with a team from her youth group.  They are working with local missionaries.  Even though we miss her, we couldn’t be more proud of her desire to spend a week of her summer sharing the Good News.  She is having a great time and I know her heart and mind will never be quite the same again.  However, we can’t wait for her to come home this week too!
  2. I have been on an organizing frenzy.  I got a new label maker…enough said.  Hahahaha!
  3. The pressure is definitely on for the start of school so I am tackling my summer projects with fierce intensity.  This week, I got the kids’ rooms cleaned and reorganized, worked on a plan for a new drop zone for backpacks, etc., did labeling and reorganizing in the kitchen and pantry, added some containers and reorganized in both the master bath and kids’ bath, and cleaned out some decor to sell!  Whew!
  4. We’ve had a lot of fun, too, with friend sleepovers, playdates, bowling, family dinners, movies, and pool time!
  5. Addy had what will hopefully be her last oral surgery, so she is a little sore, but doesn’t mind all the pasta and smoothies!

Around the blog this week:

Over on the blog, I added to my Simple Decor Series with a highly requested tutorial, tips, and ideas for shelf styling.  Shelves can sometimes feel a bit tricky, so hopefully this gives you some fresh inspiration!

Around the ‘gram this week:

I had you all vote on one day for either a coastal tablescape or a 5-minute summer centerpiece.  Should I be surprised that in these busy summer weeks that the centerpiece won?!

Over on my storefront, you can purchase every item I used to create this quick and easy table centerpiece!  Easily change it seasonally by just swapping out the shells.  Maybe mini pumpkin filler when late August or September rolls around?!

I also shared a fun styling video of my dining room shelves!  Even though summer is flying by and you’ve probably already sorted out your summer shelf decor, hopefully you can use some tips and inspiration from this whenever you get ready for a refresh!

Around my storefront this week:

It’s been a busy week around the storefront and rightfully so!  The great sales didn’t stop when Prime Days ended, that’s for sure.  I’ve scored several great deals this week and even tucked back some birthday and Christmas gifts on 50% and higher discounts!  Woohoo!

I started a new shopping list on my storefront called “Favorite Daily Deals”.  Every day, I search for some of the lesser-known deals around Amazon, including things I love for my own home, and add them to this list.  You can check it daily for all of my favorites.  Also, I share it in my Instagram stories so you can conveniently head straight to the deals list each day there too!

Here are some of the top sellers this week:

  1. These drawer dividers are adjustable and WONDERFUL!  Plus, they have organizers within the dividers that you can adjust.  I’m adding these to my kids’ dresser drawers.  They were 50% off this week!
  2. These apothecary jars are just gorgeous and can be used in so many ways!  Of course, I love the vintage style!
  3. I’m so excited for THESE refrigerator stackable drawers.  It’s going to be so convenient for back to school snacks!
  4. My favorite flameless pillar candles have a coupon!!!
  5. THIS scalloped rug is always a favorite!  Plus, there are more jute rugs on clearance on THIS shopping list too!

Coming up soon from around our nest:

  1. Christmas in July is happening this week!  Be prepared for good tidings and an imaginary break in the summer weather on Tuesday!!!
  2. I’m headed to the Haven Conference in Atlanta!  I am over the moon to be a mentor there again this year.  It is always a great time of connection with other creators as well as learning new things that I can do to help make the Robyn’s French Nest spaces better for YOU!
  3. Robb and I leave from Atlanta to head off on the World’s Longest Yard Sale!  That won’t really kick up until next Monday, but stay tuned.  I’ll take you along because we always have SO MUCH FUN!!!

Notes to My 20-Year-Old Self

Notes to My 20-Year-Old Self

Reaching milestones in life are important and they give us an extra opportunity to pause and reflect.  On my 40th birthday, here’s what I’d tell my 20-year-old self…

Milestones.  Graduations, birthdays, goals reached…all opportunities for celebration!

Today is my 40th birthday!  While I’d love to say I don’t feel older, it wouldn’t be the truth.  The last few years have probably aged most of us more than we’d care to admit.  At the same time, I am approaching this new decade in my life with some anticipation.

There is something to say for having lived enough life to finally learn some lessons and while I hopefully have a lot of life left to live, I look forward to approaching this season with some extra lessons tucked into my toolbar, so to speak.

And so, if my 40-year-old self could tell my 20-year-old self 40 things, here’s what I think she would say…

Reflections and Milestones on 40 Years

I challenged myself to just write…no apparent order, rhyme, or reason. (Try it sometime!)

  1. There are some things worth stressing over, but not as many that are as important as you’d think.
  2. Your best on most days will be significantly less than your all-time best.  That’s okay.
  3. You need to care what people think about your character and reputation.
  4. You also need to accept that sometimes you’ve done all you can do and you can’t worry anymore about what they think.
  5. You don’t need to be good at everything.
  6. You simply cannot live up to everyone’s expectations.  Lay them aside.
  7. Take the trip.  I don’t regret one cent spent on travel.
  8. Kids grow up faster than you want to think.  You can’t change it so choose to enjoy each phase.
  9. Take more things at face value.
  10. Clean baseboards are overrated.
  11. Hold “things” loosely; clear out and declutter often…both your home and your heart.
  12. Your heart can break into a thousand pieces and still smile the next day.
  13. Quality over quantity.  Almost always.
  14. It’s okay to admit when you’re tired and then rest.
  15. You don’t always have to “do” something; leave more white space on the calendar.
  16. It’s okay to say no.
  17. You are given an instinct for a reason; use it.
  18. “Chasing your tail” doesn’t get you very far.
  19. Always be learning; you never know what passion or interest it will spark.
  20. Passions may shift with seasons of life.  Don’t hang onto a an old passion just for the sake of it.
  21. They will rearrange the grocery store many times in your adult life.  You’ll survive.
  22. People are quick to tell you when you should or should not put up your Christmas tree.  You can do whatever you want to do with your own tree.
  23. Celebrate with ice cream.
  24. Buy flowers often.
  25. Walk slowly through an antique store; there’s a lot to learn.
  26. Recognize firsts and lasts, document when you can.
  27. Don’t dwell on the firsts and lasts too much.
  28. There aren’t enough Saturdays in your child’s growing up years.  Plan them wisely.
  29. Invest in good skincare BEFORE you need it.
  30. Some friendships are just for a season; that’s okay.
  31. Drink more water.
  32. Sleep isn’t overrated; plan for it and get enough.
  33. Plan and organize…but plan margin for lots of flexibility.
  34. Perfectionism destroys.
  35. Loyalty pays off, but know when to let go too.
  36. Boundaries safeguard your home.  Establish and create them from day one; it’s much harder later.
  37. Avoid trends for most things.
  38. But enjoy inexpensive trends!
  39. You actually do become the person you say you are…say nice things to yourself.
  40. Pray more, yet remember He heard you the first time.  It’s going to be okay.

So…random, I know!  And it’s really just a start of many, MANY things that could be added.  However, it was actually a great exercise and I’d encourage you to try it sometime.  At the same time, I’m excited about this new decade in my life and all the blessings it will bring…even the blessings that don’t appear to be good at the time.

Let me know in the comments…what would you tell your 20-year-old self?!

From the Nest: Reflections On the Proverbs 31 Lady

(As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.  Posts on Robyn’s French Nest may contain affiliate links. You can see our full disclosure details here.)

Have you ever questioned if you could measure up as a lady?  A wife?  A mother?  I’ll admit, I fall very short every day.  However, let’s reflect together on the Proverbs 31 lady…God’s standard!

Have you ever read Proverbs 31?  It always amazes me, yet causes me to cringe a bit too.  Or some days, maybe cringe a lot!

Mother’s Day can cause us to reflect on this role and whether you are a biological mother or not, I can’t think of a lady that doesn’t have a strong sphere of influence.

Maybe you aren’t a mother yet, but hope to someday.  Or maybe you are in those stages of little ones all around, getting into everything.  I find myself in the balancing years of children who are growing into their teens and I know my years to raise them are numbered.  There’s a pressure there that is new in this season.  Perhaps your children have grown and left home, maybe even finding yourself as a grandparent.  (Note: when I reach that stage, I hope that I look for ways to fill that role to families around me that don’t have grandparents close by.  I think that is such a huge need!). Perhaps you don’t have children but find yourself in a community where you still have a huge influence and impact on others (that is really all of us!)

Whatever season or stage you find yourself…or whatever sphere of influence surrounds you…the Proverbs 31 lady (and I call her a lady because to me, she seems pretty classy!) in influencing.  She is influencing her husband, her children, those who work for and with her, and her community.

You see, being a godly lady isn’t just what happens at home.  It’s the very thread of a woman’s character, no matter the season, no matter the stage, no matter the age, and no matter the sphere of influence.

Character matters.  So, let’s reflect for a moment on the Proverbs 31 lady.  I took this as an opportunity to make some personal notes for myself:

  • Which character traits come naturally to me?  How can I capitalize on those?
  • Which of the Proverbs 31 lady’s qualities are a weakness for me?  Name specific examples to yourself and how you could improve in that situation.
  • Find Scripture that relates to those weaknesses and memorize; let them start becoming part of the thread of your character.
  • Pray about the strengths AND weaknesses, that each are a learning and growth opportunity.
  • Be mindful of opportunities to practice the strengths and improve upon the weaknesses.

From the Nest: Reflections On the Proverbs 31 Lady

“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.  Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.”

She is trustworthy.

“She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.”

She shows a pattern of making good choices for her family and this gives them confidence that she will continue to bring goodness and love to those in her care.

“She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.  She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.  She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls.”

She takes joy in her work and shows self-discipline to meet the needs of her household, even when it’s hard.

“She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.  She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.  She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.  In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.”

She has educated herself and is able to make decisions that help provide for her family.  Most of all, she is a hard worker and makes sure the job gets done.

“She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.”

She has learned the art of hospitality and shows empathy toward others.

“When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.  She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.”

She has planned ahead and prepared in advance for the needs of her family.  She takes notice and care of the details.  The Proverbs 31 lady takes care of herself and presents herself with dignity.

“Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.”

She has held her husband in high-esteem to others and built him up.  She doesn’t speak negatively of him to her community.

“She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.”

She is creative and looks for ways to turn her gifts and talents into something that can benefit her family too.

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.  She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.”

While the Proverbs 31 lady works hard, she keeps a sense of humor and a positive outlook.  She uses her influence in her family to train them to do the same.

“She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

She carefully manages her home, and may I add, with grace.

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”

She is respected, loved, and appreciated by her family!

I don’t know about you, but when I read about the Proverbs 31 lady, my first thought is that she is just perfect.  Honestly, it’s a little annoying.  No one is perfect; we were created to need Him!

However, some reflection made me realize…we don’t know what obstacles and challenges she pushed through.  We don’t know the hurt that she overcame.  We don’t know the frustrations she faced, being so intentional to do the right thing, yet functioning in a broken world.  We are not told about all the days that she fell short and totally failed.

What we do know is that a picture is painted for us to strive for.  I don’t think it’s a picture that any of us should expect to mirror, but rather high benchmarks of a high calling: to serve God, our homes, and our communities.

I am tempted to follow up with “the best we can.”  And while I think that is true of everything we do, I think a better way might be to end that sentence “with grace.”

My best, your best is going to look different on different days and in different seasons.  There is also significant and unhealthy pressure in always “doing your best.”  There has to be space for grace and rest and acknowledgement of imperfection.  That is okay too!  I’m still learning about this in my own life, so I write from a place of trying to grow, not from a place of having it all figured out!

So, on this Mother’s Day (I say, Ladies’ Day!), “try with grace.”  Work toward the high calling to serve God, your home, your community, and your sphere of influence and try with grace.

Most days will fall short of your best, most successful day.  That’s okay.  Keep trying to make a difference in your sphere of influence.  Try with grace.

Most days will have messy parts.  That’s okay.  Be intentional to seek out the good, disciplined to work on the less than, and allow space to grow.

Most days will have exhausting parts.  Especially exhausting when you tried your best, tried with grace, and still fell short.  Learn to rest in all ways: physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

Most days will carry many demands.  Demands of your energy, creativity, physical strength, emotions, and heart.  Set boundaries, learn to say no.  Just because you “can” do something, according to the white space on your calendar, doesn’t mean you “should” do that.  Sometimes saying no to an opportunity, whether it’s a job or just a dinner out, is exactly the right thing to do.

Sometimes, I feel like it’s a bit of a season of triage.  Can anyone relate?!  A text dings for someone wanting an answer to this question, a notification goes off for this emergency, the phone rings with news, (can I quickly say…silencing notifications is a gift you can give yourself and your family?!), dinner is late, someone from work needs this done immediately, the washing machine breaks, and we haven’t started on the list of super random things my kids seem to always need. But first in that triage are the people living under my roof, as they are the home I’ve been given to manage.  Set boundaries that even allow you to be able to meet those needs first.

Every day…make an effort to try with grace.  You’re not alone and there is a big, amazing, wonderful Heavenly Father who cares about you, your children, your family, your sphere of influence even more than you do.  Trust Him to fill the gaps!

It’s going to be okay.

Your sphere of influence is give to you on purpose and on time.  A heart that is seeking Him will not be one that ultimately fails. Proverbs 31 lady-in-training…you’ve got this because He’s got this and He’s got YOU!

Create a Christmas with Purpose: Christmas Bell DIY Idea

Create a Christmas with Purpose: Christmas Bell DIY Idea

In this series of finding purpose in the Christmas season, we are drawing from the words of a poem written in 1863. Let peace be part of your Christmas purpose this year. Fill your home with intentional purpose this Christmas and create a simple Christmas bell DIY idea to create festive beauty in your home!

Bells are very on trend this Christmas season.  I can’t say exactly what I think it is that is making them so popular, except they are the very definition of joy and festivity!  It is the perfect time to start thinking of how you can create a Christmas bell DIY for your own home this season.

From a decor view, I love the symbolism they bring into our home.  They also add some interesting texture, shape, and the traditional golds of Christmas.  Keep reading to the end and I’ll share how we created this Christmas bell DIY idea for our dining room.  It’s one of my favorite focal points in my Christmas decor!

Also, it is a trend that I hope stays around for a very long time!  My husband hopes so too because he is really excited to help me hang these bells up again for many years to come. ???? (A little sarcasm there…????)

What does a bell have to do with Christmas?

Bells announce the arrival of something or someone important or can be used to proclaim an event or occasion.  Interestingly enough, the use of bells can be traced back to pagan roots.  At that time, bells were used to ward off evil spirits. However, the bells were so fun to use that they eventually made their way into municipal and church use.  For example, bells would be rung in good times, such as a wedding or coronation.  At the same time, bells would toll for hard times, such as impending weather or a funeral.

Why do Christians hang up bells at Christmas?

Now, bells symbolize the announcement of the birth of Christ during the Christmas season.  For our family, that is all the reason we need to make them a focal point in our home!

At the same time, I think Christmas bells also symbolize welcoming a season of good-cheer, peace, memories, and loads of fun to be had, too!  I definitely had a lot of fun with the Christmas bell DIY idea that I’m sharing with you at the end of this blog post today!

Why was “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” written?

I also love that the bells remind me of one of my favorite Christmas poems, eventually turned into a Christmas hymn.

In 1863, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote “Christmas Bells”, right in the middle of the Civil War.  The text “hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, goodwill to men” certainly rang true in those dark years.

158 years later, there is a lot of darkness.  Division, frustration, cultural tensions, sickness…it’s all part of our 2022 Christmas, whether we want to admit it or not.

Thankfully, neither the poem or the story ends there.  Let’s take a look…and if you’re very familiar with Longfellow’s work, I still think it is worth a few minutes for a re-read of these words:

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day: Christmas Bell DIY Idea

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
and wild and sweet
The words repeat

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said;
“For hate is strong,
And mocks the song

Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,

With peace on earth, good-will to men.”

What is the meaning of “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day”?

Who am I to try to add to that poem’s end?  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s words are full of hope for peace and goodwill. Is there anything that can possibly be better than that during the Christmas season?

However, reflection leaves us wondering just how we can do our part to create peace and goodwill.  Life quickly teaches us that peace, love, and goodwill do not just happen on accident.  In fact, without intentionality and purposeful living (and loving), peace and goodwill are impossible.  It brings us to ask the question, once again, of what our role might be in creating peace and goodwill here on earth.  How can I even make a difference?  Is that even possible?

I’m reminded of words I have said and written many times:

I can bring goodwill and hope and peace to my circle of influence.  Right now, my immediate circle of influence is right within the walls of my home.

In the famous words of Mother Teresa, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.”

Even though I would describe my blog and social media as a home decor account, it means more to me than that.  However, there is a bigger purpose.

Christmas decorating actually isn’t just for all the fuss and show and perfectly festive touches.  To me, it is much deeper.  In the creative ways God has blessed me with and the resources at my disposal, I am doing my part to bring an environment of peace and hope and goodwill to my little family.

At the same time, I think of it as setting the stage.  Even though all of those things come from the heart, our environment and what we surround ourselves with does matter and it does make a difference.

The mission is clear: spreading goodwill to my family.

Simple and Easy Christmas Bell DIY Idea

How do you display Christmas bells?

Since this poem has become somewhat of an anthem and definite Christmas inspiration for me, I decided a few years ago to make Christmas bells a focal point in my decorating too.

Here are a few ways that I decorate around our home with Christmas bells:

What can you make with Christmas bells?

I decided to create my own focal point with large bells in our dining room.  As promised, I will give you a quick tutorial on this DIY bell garland that Robb helped me make.  Admittedly, there was a moment (or two) where goodwill was doubtful. ???? But he figured out how to get it to stay and all has stayed peaceful.

However, Robb says that if those bells come crashing down in the night, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” would turn into “Do You Hear What I Hear?” ???????? Thankfully, they have stayed put and are making this whole space feel so festive!

Step One: Christmas Bell DIY Idea

First, I picked these bells up at Hobby Lobby back in October.  However, I’m not sure if they are still in stock.  For 50% off, however, it’s worth checking online and calling around the stores in your area!

Also, you can find some vintage-inspired ones online HERE and HERE.

Tip: measure your space and choose the bells in the right size and scale for the feature you are creating.

Step Two: Christmas Bell DIY Idea

Secondly, we cut a small branch and stripped it of leaves.  You could also use a curtain rod or pole of some kind.  I loved that the branch was totally free (budget-friendly decor!).  At the same time, I love the juxtaposition of the crooked, rustic branch and the more formal look of the bells.

Step Three: Christmas Bell DIY Idea

Third, I strung the bells in a way that would feel somewhat random but still be balanced visually.  Next, Robb wrapped twine around the middle and then it loops around the branches at each end a few times.

Step Four: Christmas Bell DIY Idea

Lastly, he put one nail in each end of the cabinet, in a high spot where the small hole will never show.  I supported the branch and bells while he wrapped the twine around the nail as tightly as possible.  (This is important to hold it taut.). Next, he tied the twine to secure it.

I honestly wasn’t at all sure that we could get the bells to stay up without lots of nails and supports (which we didn’t want to do to this antique apothecary, of course).  Thankfully, it worked out very well because it’s one of my favorite things in our home for Christmas!

The bells, the symbolism, and the reminder of hope and goodwill for each and every one of us means so much to me!

How do you decorate with big bells? (In addition to a Christmas bell DIY idea, of course!)

In addition to the ways that I mentioned that I use Christmas bells in our own here, here are a few more ways that I think would be easy and beautiful:

Are you ready to create your own Christmas bell DIY idea?

We’ve talked about why Christmas bells are even part of the Christmas tradition.  History has inspired us with the purposefulness of using bells in and around our homes to celebrate the season.  Now, it’s up to you!  Whether you create a beautiful Christmas bell DIY idea, purchase some gorgeous bells ready to hang, or add simple bells in a bowl or on a tablescape, I hope you do so with intentionality and purpose.

After all, if you are reading this blog post, you are probably as aware as I am that in this season of my life and my role in our family and home, I am largely responsible for creating an atmosphere and environment where peace and goodwill can thrive.  It would seem that if peace and goodwill can find their way into our hearts and minds at any time in the year, it would be Christmas.

Let the bells ring in your home and in your heart this Christmas.  At the same time, be intentional with your space.  Create an environment where peace and goodwill will ring true for you and your family!

Create a Christmas Full of Purpose: Joy to the World

Create a Christmas Full of Purpose: Joy to the World

Struggling to create an intentional Christmas? You can have a Christmas season filled with the purpose of Joy! Hint: it’s not in a cozy home!

The table has been cleared, the leftovers are likely about gone, Christmas trees have gone up, and maybe a few gifts have started appearing underneath from last week’s sales.  The stockings are lined up on the mantel and family plans are being made for the next holiday gathering.

The countdown is on: 27 days until Christmas.

27 days to celebrate the most beautiful, the most wonderful time of year.

27 days to find purpose in Christmas.

I love that line from the old movie, “Miracle on 34th Street”: “Oh, Christmas isn’t just a day, it’s a frame of mind.”

And it is so true!  I love the Christmas season for many reasons, but one reason is that it just seems that the world, in general, is in a better mood.  A better frame of mind.

(Never mind a few Scrooges in the bunch.  There’s always a few! ????)

Over the past couple of years, there has been a slow change in my frame of mind for Christmas.  I LOVE the lights, the parties, the concerts, the gatherings, all the events and flurry of activity.  But I am finding that even more, I love the quiet moments where I take a minute to discipline myself to slow my activity, still my mind, and bow my heart.

In the words of Ann Voskamp, one of my favorite writers, “I want a Christmas that whispers Jesus.”

If you stop and think back to the time in history when Jesus was born, it was pretty somber.  There was a lot of turmoil and strife.  There was friction between the people and the king.  There was frustration over finances.

The flurry of people in Bethlehem wasn’t because all the extra people wanted to be there.

And while the manger scene is always depicted in glowing light with cute animals, clean hay, and calm surroundings, I just can’t help but think it felt anything but glowing, clean, or calm to Mary, or Joseph for that matter.

Joyful?  Most certainly.  Not joyful because their surroundings gave them all the cozy vibes, but joyful because of Who was there.

Not joyful because they were comfortable, but joyful because the One who is Love had arrived.

Definitely not joyful because they were surrounded by people who showed them grace, but joyful because the Person who created grace, Emmanuel, let out His first infant cry on that holy night.

These 27 days may not be filled with soft, cozy vibes (though I make every effort to create that for my family!).  You may not experience 27 days of peace and comfort.  There may not be abundant grace shown to you (remember those few Scrooges?).

But it can be a joyful 27 days.

For me, I know my 27 days are going to be busy.  No matter how far ahead I work, how well I plan, how hard I try to carve out calm and peaceful moments, it’s just going to be plain busy.

Music performances, school programs, birthdays, parties, shopping, wrapping, more planning, more events…it all stacks up.  Even all the good stuff gets overwhelming.

That’s not to mention the maybe not-so-good things you’re dealing with too.  Stress, grief, worry, fear, complicated circumstances.

But it doesn’t have to define your Christmas.  Your purpose can be much greater.

Even in a crowded store or standstill traffic, purpose to still your mind.  When you finally arrive home at the end of a crazy day, slow your activity.

(Admittedly, this is a tough one for me.  We could have a whole blog post about setting boundaries for your family in the midst of a busy season, but I’ll condense it to this: You have the ability to say no and choose what will bring the purpose of joy and calm to your family.)

In the middle of getting from one party to the next, take a second to bow your heart and refresh your joy.

You can find joy no matter the circumstances surrounding these 27 days.

“People with their minds set on you, you keep completely whole, Steady on their feet, because they keep at it and don’t quit. Depend on God and keep at it because in the Lord God you have a sure thing.”  -Isaiah 26:3, MSG

“Joy to the world! The Lord is come
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.”

Joy to the World was first published in 1719 by Isaac Watts.  It was never intended to be a Christmas carol, but rather part of his Psalms of David Imitated, which was a collection of songs written from paraphrases of many Psalms.  Joy to the World is actually inspired by the last part of Psalm 98.

“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.”

Psalm 98:4

Even it if it feels like just a whisper on some days, don’t let everything around you consume your joy.

Make it a Christmas with a purpose; the purpose is joy.

Day Trip to Applecrest Farm, Hampton Falls NH

Day Trip to Applecrest Farm, Hampton Falls NH

I can’t even tell you why the apple picking was such a big deal to me.  Except that in pictures, it just always looks so beautiful.  And I finally got to pick an apple for the first time this fall!

Growing up in Kansas, I am accustomed to wheat fields but apple trees weren’t really grown around our area.  And in Florida, we are surrounded with citrus trees instead.

So it was a BIG DEAL for our family to go apple picking on our family day trip to New Hampshire this fall.  In fact, our entire trip was planned around the fall festival date at the Applecrest Farm in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire.

The pictures online looked so perfect.

And we were not disappointed!

You would think after hundreds of people picking apples, that it would start to look a little, well, picked over.

But the apples were literally weighing down the branches to the point of branches dragging the ground.  Those of you who live around such sites may not really think of it as super special, but it was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.

I’ll always remember this day.

And there was one verse that rolled over and over in my mind as I chased after my kids, snapping pictures of every single apple they picked.

“O taste and see that the Lord is good.”

I’m going to get really, really honest and really, really vulnerable with you for a minute.

Maybe you’ve never experienced this before, but there have been some seasons of my life where it didn’t really look or feel like God was good.

I won’t go into specifics because, like most trials, they aren’t my story alone to tell.  And the details don’t matter as much as the truth I need to be reminded of often.  Maybe there is one other person out there today who needs reminded too.

From a very young child, I knew I loved God and I wanted to do right.  And at the same time, wondering why He was “good” to this person and not to another.  Or why He did “good” in this situation while allowing another one to fall apart.

Why this apple grew big and beautiful and this apple fell to the ground to rot?

It would seem that age and maturity would take those questions away.

But just this year, I have sat in the bathroom floor (because let’s be honest, where else can a mom be by herself?!) and asked God these very questions.

Why don’t you fix this?

Why won’t you work good in this situation?”

Why does this feel so bad when You are so good?

And yet….

Age and maturity help us understand that the other side of situations usually are not what they seem.  And the resolutions sometimes turn out better than we could have thought and in a very different way than we would have imagined.

Age and maturity also help us understand that some situations just don’t turn out for earthly good.  Some circumstances will never, ever be understood from our humanly perspective.

Sometimes what we know to be right doesn’t feel good.

In fact, it may feel gut-wrenching and heart-breaking.

And yet….

He is still good.

How do I know?

The Bible tells me so.  I can’t believe some parts and not all.  That’s where determined faith becomes everything.

The Bible tells me that He is good and that He works all things for good and that He loves me.  In some situations and in some circumstances, that has to be enough.  I have to choose to have faith and let that truth be enough for me.

Even though my heart and mind may scream for life to feel good, or at best, at least a reason why it doesn’t.

How else can I say, with certainty, that God is good?

Because He has been good to me.  There are ebenezer moments, stakes driven in the ground, so to speak.  Moments that have unmistakably and undeniably proved His goodness.

Are there many, many things I can’t understand?  Absolutely.

Will I ever again feel like God isn’t good?  Undoubtedly.

And that is when I can go back and visit what I know to be true, even when my heart would try to deny it.

All of this from apple picking?

I can’t really explain it, but as we took the little tractor trailer ride back to the designated area where we were paying to pick apples on that October day, all I could see was the abundance.

The goodness.

The faithfulness of the apple trees to produce this amazing fruit each year.

Dependable.

Steadfast.

A time to sow and a time to reap.

“O taste and see that the Lord is good.”

All I have to do is reach up and pick the apple from the tree.

As for the apples that fall to the ground to rot?  All we see of them is the decay and rot.  And yet, the fertilization the add to the soil, the continuation of the life cycle of the apple…so many good things happening that I just can’t see.

Just because I can’t see good happening, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.  Beauty beneath the soil.

There is good all around us because He is good.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Rain, Rain, Go Away

In my classroom, filled with little people and big personalities, we just ended a unit in Bible about Noah and the Ark.  As I prepared to teach the unit, I decided to really give some thought as to why I think this unit is important for preschoolers.

The obvious answer is that it’s pretty fun!  What 3-year-old doesn’t love animals, rainbows, and the “Rain, rain, go away” rhyme?

The more complex answer is that, besides being part of the Bible, it is inherently a story of obedience.

Ugh…

Obedience is a tough one to tackle.  For starters, our culture tends to lean more and more toward the sentiment of “do whatever makes you happy” rather than “do whatever is right.”  Secondly, obedience isn’t always fun.  Am I right?

I remember when one of our girls (okay, the one who makes all the yummy pastries!) got in trouble at school for the very first time.  She was a happy 4-year-old, full of life, but mostly well-behaved and she certainly knew that our expectation was that she listen to her teachers.

On one particularly rainy, South Florida day, her teacher greeted me at the door at dismissal time. She oh-so-kindly let me know that my child would not be receiving her little green day medal because she disobeyed.

Of course, I was appalled.  (You know how it is, especially with the first child.  You just so badly want to believe that your child is perfect?!). “What happened?”, I asked?

Come to find out, the rain puddles were just too tempting and too exciting on the walk back from lunch.  I had to hide my smile.

Tell me what 4-year-old doesn’t love rain puddles?

We went home with a reminder to always obey the teacher.  And a wet, muddy, adorable little not-so-white ruffled sock and a dirty Mary Jane shoe.

The point?  Obeying was not the fun thing.  Stomping in the puddle brought immediate joy and giggles.

As I’ve been teaching about Noah over the past couple of weeks, it has made me reflect on a couple of things:

  1. What. A.  Mess.  To put it mildly, building the ark was complicated, disheartening, humiliating at times.  Once in the ark, it must have felt so dark.  Damp.  Dirty.  Noisy.  No fun at all.
  2. It was a loooooong time. Noah was waiting with no end in sight.  To our knowledge, he had no idea how long it would take for all of that water to dissipate or how long before he and his family could set their feet on dry land.

I’m a schedule kind of person.  I also know I can endure things better when I know how long the waiting will be.

Noah had no idea.

What he did know, and what we now know is this:

“Noah did everything the Lord commanded of him.”

Genesis 7:5

I’ve always been a fairly obedient person.  I don’t like to be in trouble, I like to follow the rules.  I don’t consider it my calling in life to be the one who “shakes things up.”

Obeying…in the waiting…is a whole different ballgame.

Having faith to obey in the waiting isn’t easy.

Having hope while obeying in the waiting and being content at the same time are equally difficult.

But as I’ve told the story of Noah and the Ark to my little class, I have been reminded over and over of the significance of obedience.  Noah’s obedience and God’s faithfulness to keep His promises literally changed the world.

Obedience isn’t always easy but it is always worth it.  Integrity and doing the right thing…”even when no one is watching”, as our kids say…is always worth it.

You may be in a season where obedience is easy.  But you may find yourself in a season where obedience is complicated and disheartening, just as Noah was.  It may be a time that is full of questions and even frustrations.

Whatever your ark is in this season of life, I pray that you and I build, wait, hope, and trust with unwavering confidence.  Content in His faithfulness.

“But this I call to mind and therefore I have hope.  The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.  His mercies never come to an end.  They are new every morning.  Great is Your faithfulness.”

Weeds Into Flowers

Weeds Into Flowers

It’s the Robyn’s French Nest version of “lemons into lemonade”….

This really all came about a few days ago when I was working on a tablescape.  My plan was to take a lovely trip to Trader Joe’s for some flowers and fresh greenery.  My reality was too little time and too little energy to make the trip.  That left me looking around for something to put down the middle of my table.

In the trees by our driveway (the ones that I often cut branches from to use in my décor), there is some kind of invasive weed growing.  I actually spent far too long on Google trying to determine what kind it is and still couldn’t figure it out.

All I know is that it’s taking over the tree and we really need to clean it out soon!

In the meantime, I thought I would give it a try as fresh greenery for my tablescape!  The long, vine-like branches are pretty perfect for casually draping around the centerpiece and they still looked good the next day, too!  I love using fresh greenery but some kinds wilt so quickly!

(In other words, this might end up being a repeat experiment!)

As I was working with my centerpiece and tablescape, I had to kind of smile.  This wouldn’t be the first time I used weeds on my table.

I remember a dinner party I had at Christmas one year.  I used some branches from the pepper berry trees (they get red berries in the Florida winter months and are perfect for Christmas décor!). I got a little teasing at that dinner for putting weeds on the table.

On this day, it also made me smile because it’s really a perfect analogy.  The landscapers really hate these weeds and invasive plants.  I, in my need for a long, vine-like branch, found them incredibly useful and even pretty!  (Granted, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!)

You and I are a little like weeds.  Imperfect, flawed creations who, by nature, won’t be viewed by everyone as pretty or even useful.

Just this week, I had to apologize for a grouchy attitude, get myself to bed a little early, take some deep breaths in moments of frustration, put my chin up and smile when I didn’t feel good, and wish I could do a few things over again.

You too?  I’m so glad I’m not alone.

I am quite certain that I was not always lovely in the eyes of my family this week.  More like a weed at moments, to be honest.  Thankfully, they love me very much and are very forgiving.

But if it hasn’t happened to you yet, it will.  Someone, somewhere, sometime will let you know that you aren’t their “cup of tea.”  More like a weed.  It’s certainly happened to me!  In our humanness, we cannot be all things to all people at all times.

And it is okay to be okay with that.  In fact, it’s important to be okay with that.

But sometimes, life can sting.  Whether by nature or as a result of our own humanness, we will undoubtedly feel “less than” sometimes.  More like a weed.

At some point, we are going to be tempted to feel like we are not enough.  Like we can’t measure up.  Like we can’t get it right.  More like a weed.

But remember my tablescape weeds?  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

And you and I are being held by God.

Not like a weed, at all, rather as a treasure, created in His image, created for on purpose for His purpose, and covered by Grace.  More like a flower.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”

-Jeremiah 31:3

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”

-Isaiah 43:1

“For we are God’s masterpiece.  He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”

-Ephesians 2:10

“The Lord your God is with you He is mighty enough to save you.  He will take great delight in you.  With His love, He will calm all your fears.  He will sing with joy because of you.”

-Zephaniah 3:17

In the eye of the only Beholder who really matters, YOU matter.  Not a weed, but a precious flower, created with intentional purpose, molded in love, and nurtured in grace.

Next time you head out to cut some flowers or greenery for your table, don’t overlook the weeds.

Much love from our nest.

“It’s Too Hard”

“It’s Too Hard”

Oh, the stories from the preschool classroom!  Kids really do say the cutest things.  I’ve been hearing one comment a lot this week from a particular student.  For privacy, I’ll just call this student “Cutie Pie”!

Cutie Pie is in a little habit of declaring, “It’s too hard!”

I say a habit, because Cutie Pie has a bright, young mind and is capable of things beyond what is even considered age-appropriate.

But I get it.  Totally.  Sometimes things just seem a little too hard for the moment.  Sometimes we just don’t WANT to do them, either, right?

My response to Cutie Pie is usually, “It’s okay, you can do hard things too” and then just be available for when Cutie Pie actually needs a little help or direction.  I want Cutie Pie to learn.  And learning doesn’t really come from the easy things.

As so often happens, (probably because I spend a good portion of my week with 3-year-olds), I felt a little check this week.  I will admit, I’ve been grumbling a bit of late to God.  “It’s too hard!”

Anyone else?  Surely I’m not alone in this.

And the grumbling seems silly when I stop and think about it.  I had to give myself the same talk that I did my son a couple weeks ago, on a particularly frustrating day, which he proclaimed to be a “hard day”.

Blessings abound.  I have a family who loves me, a comfortable home, a teaching job that allows me to be close to my children, more than enough food to eat, and so many “wants” too.  We don’t really know what hard is; I get that.

But days…or weeks…or seasons do come that seem especially hard.  We all have hard days, ranging from “I stubbed my toe” hard to soul-crushing hard.

I read this passage from Ann Voskamp a few years ago and it has stuck with me.  I wanted to share the entirety with you because it resonated deeply with me and still does:

“You have enough of Me and courage

to do this hard thing.

You have enough of Me and strength

to not give up.

You have enough of Me and love

to keep on going.

You have enough of Me and peace

to know that you are carried.

You have enough of Me

to simply rest.

You have enough of Me

and I am enough.

You are enough – because the great I AM is

In you, and with you, and for you.

And that alone is

completely enough.

Ann Voskamp

Philippians 4:13 is well-loved, often quoted, and you likely have it memorized too:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Sometimes…maybe often times lately…everything around us just feels too hard and we need a reminder that His grace is enough and His love is enough.

In the daily routines and mundane parts of life, I find myself sometimes just needing a reminder that God loves me.  And He loves you.  And He is enough.

I don’t know what your hard thing is this week.  You may not even know what your hard thing will be.  While I may think I know what my hard thing will be, I’ve lived long enough to know that the unexpected happens.  (Robb so kindly reminded me this week about how many decades old I am.  Of course, he hit the big 4-0 this year, so I can still hang that over his head for awhile. Haha!)

But in all seriousness, life happens and hard things come.  Some happen simply because we live in a fallen world.  Some hard things are allowed to come in to our lives to help us learn!

As you go through your week, I hope you remember that with God, you have what it takes.  And just like Cutie Pie, you can do hard things too.

I’d love to know how I can pray for you this week.  I welcome you to leave your prayer request in the comments.  Let’s pray for and encourage one another this week!

Much love from our nest.
