For years, whenever someone asked me about my home decor or design style, I would usually answer with a whole string of words: cottage, vintage, some coastal, and maybe a little traditional thrown in for good measure. I loved the relaxed beauty of a coastal cottage home, the timeless appeal of antique furniture, and the collected charm of blue and white decor. But somehow, none of those labels ever felt like the whole story.

Then I discovered the term Coastal Grandmillennial, and I thought, “Well, that explains everything!”

This decorating style beautifully combines classic coastal decor with collected home style to create spaces that feel warm, welcoming, and timeless. Instead of chasing every new trend, Coastal Grandmillennial summer decor embraces the things that never really go out of style, like hydrangeas, wicker baskets, blue and white ginger jars, antique wood furniture, linen fabrics, and meaningful treasures collected over time.

And maybe my favorite part? You don’t have to live on the coast, or be a grandmother (thank goodness!), to embrace this style. In fact, I think that’s what makes it so special. The relaxed and breezy elements of coastal cottage decor combine with traditional patterns, vintage treasures, and collected home decor ideas to create a look that feels elegant without feeling formal or cluttered.

For years, minimalist interiors dominated the design world. Everything was white, modern, and perfectly streamlined. While beautiful, it was never a trend that I could grab onto for my own home.

Instead, I found myself leaning more and more into Coastal Grandmillennial  summer decor and it seems like many other homemakers feel the same way!

Rather than focusing on perfection, the Coastal Grandmother decor style embraces personality and meaningful collections. It encourages us to mix old and new decorative objects, display timeless pieces in a beautiful way that function in real life too, and create homes that tell our stories.

Perhaps that’s why collected home style has become so popular in recent years. People are rediscovering the beauty of decorating slowly and surrounding themselves with pieces that feel timeless rather than trendy.  While almost every decor style is a trend at some point, grandmillennial spaces have less of a trendy feel.  Rather, they are more of a fresh take on traditional design with classic pieces that can be incorporated into many different decorating styles.  

And honestly, I hope this Coastal Grandmillennial decor style is here to stay.

The Coastal Grandmillennial Color Palette

One of the reasons I love Coastal Grandmillennial and Coastal Grandmother decorating so much is because the colors feel peaceful and so calming to me.  The soft blues against mostly neutral colors often mirror the outdoors of our South Florida weather, where the palm branches blow gently against the blue skies.  It’s one of my favorite things about where we live here on the east coast of Florida!

Now, here in South Florida, palm branches are a year-round staple.  But we also have beautiful pine, cypress, and oak branches that are fun to bring in throughout the seasons.

If I had to choose one element that truly defines Coastal Grandmillennial summer decor, it would definitely be blue and white decor.

Blue and white decorating has remained popular for centuries because it is timeless, elegant, and surprisingly versatile. Whether your home leans toward coastal cottage decor, traditional style, or grandmillennial decorating, blue and white pieces effortlessly blend with almost everything.

My ginger jars are all smaller and range from $10 at a yard sale to $15 at HomeGoods. 

Chinoiserie Summer Decor

Chinoiserie summer decor fits beautifully within the Coastal Grandmillennial style.  While I especially love the blue and white to add in patriotic flags for with summer decorating, the blue and white decor is a perfect choice to mix in with any season.

Elegant blue and white porcelain, decorative bowls, pretty plates, and classic patterns bring sophistication and charm to any room. Even a few small chinoiserie accents can make a space feel designer-inspired and elevated.

Chinoiserie pieces are pretty easy to find at thrift stores and antique malls, as well as new pieces at places like Marshall’s and HomeGoods.  Almost all of my chinoiserie plates, jars, and vases are thrifted very inexpensively!

I especially love pairing chinoiserie pieces with natural textures like wicker, rattan, and linen. The contrast between refined porcelain and casual materials creates the perfect balance of vintage elegance and cottage comfort.

Sometimes the easiest way to refresh a room for summer is simply by changing the textiles and accessories.  It’s a quick way to make a space feel fresh for the new season.

Sadly, our South Florida weather is just way too hot for hydrangeas to grow outside very well.  BUT, I have the perfect dupe for fresh hydrangeas with THESE super realistic faux hydrangeas.  I use them all over our home.  Over the years, I’ve saved a lot of money on party and special event decor by using these pretty faux flowers instead of buying fresh flowers.  They really are so realistic!

Some of my favorite ways to decorate with hydrangeas include:

  • Kitchen Island Centerpieces: A large blue and white vase filled with white or blue hydrangeas instantly creates a designer-inspired centerpiece that feels elegant yet effortless.
  • Coffee Tables: I love placing a simple arrangement in a cane-wrapped glass vase or chinoiserie cachepot on the coffee table.  Flowers are one of the easiest ways to make a room feel welcoming.
  • Mantels: Hydrangeas soften the hard lines of a mantel and pair beautifully with brass candlesticks, vintage books, seashells/coral, and blue and white decor.
  • Front Porches: Nothing says summer quite like hydrangeas paired with wicker furniture, lanterns, and striped pillows.  This year, I added THESE camellia bushes  instead of hydrangeas.  They are also incredibly realistic and the size makes a nice statement by our front door!
  • Dining Tables: Whether entertaining guests or simply enjoying everyday meals with family, hydrangeas always make a table feel special.  THIS ready-made arrangement is the perfect size for a great little centerpiece that isn’t too tall for easy conversation.  Again, it looks incredibly realistic!

Decorating with Wicker and Rattan

No coastal grandmillennial home would be complete without natural textures. Wicker and rattan are essential elements of classic coastal decor because they add warmth and help balance more formal pieces like chinoiserie and antique furniture.

I love how these natural materials bring a relaxed, casual feeling to a room while still looking elegant and timeless.  Plus, wicker and rattan pieces are also fairly easy to pick up second-hand, so they make the perfect budget-friendly accents.

  • Woven Baskets: Beautiful baskets are one of my favorite decorating tools. They add texture while also providing practical storage.
  • Cane Chairs: Whether vintage or new, cane-back chairs bring instant character and timeless style.  We added new cushions and a fresh coat of paint to our FB Marketplace cane chairs!

  • Woven Trays: Trays are wonderful for creating cozy vignettes on coffee tables, ottomans, and kitchen islands.
  • Sisal or Jute Rugs: Natural fiber rugs are a staple of coastal cottage decor and help ground a room while adding softness and warmth.

How to Create a Collected Home Style

Perhaps my favorite thing about Coastal Grandmillennial decorating is that it gives us permission to decorate slowly.  In this busy season of life, there are so many things that feel busy and rushed.  I tend to want to approach decorating our home the same way.  

However, I’ve found that I enjoy keeping our home fresh and decorated by slowly transitioning little things here and there.  It is much more relaxing and also helps me recycle decor that I already have rather than buying a lot of new things at once to totally revamp a space.

A collected home isn’t built in a weekend.  I repeat: a collected home IS NOT BUILT in a weekend!  Rather, a curated home is created with a few weekend antiquing finds, tucked in here and there. Mixing in new items that conveniently arrive on your doorstep in a box with thrifted treasures scored on those “let’s just stop for a quick minute” shopping trips.
