How to decorate on a low budget?

If you are reading this blog post, there is a high likelihood that you enjoy decorating and refreshing your home like I do.  However, we all know that home decor can be so expensive! Being creative with thrift store finds is a really fun way to add to your home decor collection.  In fact, I think secondhand shopping has been the very best way for me to enjoy changing around my home decor while sticking to an affordable budget.

Secondhand items are not the only way to decorate on a low budget, though!  There are many hidden gems in the clearance aisles, end-of-season sales, and even warehouse sales!  I love mixing great deals on new finds with thrifted home decor too!

In this post, we are going to share some great ways to decorate your home with some budget-friendly thrifted home decor!

How to save on home decor?

There are great ways to save on home decor and it is 1000% possible to decorate a beautiful and cozy home on a budget!  These are my go-to places to purchase home decor pieces for affordable prices:

  • Secondhand stores
  • Facebook marketplace
  • Estate sales
  • Flea markets
  • Garage sales
  • Vintage shop
  • Antique store (there are definitely very high-end antique stores but even in the more expensive ones, you can sometimes find a good sale corner!)
  • Other online marketplace like Etsy, Poshmark, and Ebay
  • Social media sales, like live sales on Instagram or Facebook

How do I change my home decor on a budget?

This post is going to show you some of our favorite thrifted home decor finds along with styling tips and ideas.  However, here are a few quick tips to get you started as you think about how you can change or refresh your home decor on a budget.

  1. Be patient in the hunt; the best home decor items will be worth the wait!
  2. Invest in neutrals that can be used in different rooms for varied purposes.
  3. Shop your own home to see how you can repurpose what you already have.  The perfect piece might be hiding in another room of your home and the best part is that it will be FREE!
  4. Use online resources, like FB Marketplace, to daily search for specific pieces.
  5. Find out when your local thrift stores restock and visit THAT day or as soon as possible for the best items.
  6. Declutter your own space before starting to fill it with “new” treasures.  Plus, having a yard sale or selling some home decor on an online marketplace can give you some extra cash on hand to help you change your home decor!
  7. Look for the best deals on pieces that need a little love and be willing to put in some elbow grease!
  8. Invest in thrifted home decor with better quality versus just what is “inexpensive”.  Project pieces can be fun and unique pieces, but make sure the “bones” of your thrifted treasures are in good condition!
  9. Only buy what you love.  Just because thrifted items are a great deal doesn’t necessarily mean that they are always the right kind of pieces for your home.  It’s okay to be picky with your favorite finds!
