If you don’t love swapping pillow covers to go with your holiday decor, can we even be friends?!  Just kidding!!!  However, I do love Christmas throw pillows.  I also love Christmas pillow ideas that aren’t necessarily only to be used at Christmas time.  Pillow covers and Christmas pillow ideas that I can recycle throughout the year for other seasons make some of the best home decor, in my opinion.

Then, when the holiday season rolls around, it is fun to mix, match, and even add some Christmas season specific festive pillows to add a fun and magical Christmas spirit to your holiday decor.  In addition to all of the cute Christmas pillows out there, I’ve also found some really fun pillows that are perfect to add a little whimsy to your home decor.

So, ready to browse my curated favorites for this Christmas season?  Even if you don’t need any new Christmas throw pillows for your own home, these ideas might spark some inspiration of how you can mix, match, and layer your existing pillows.

Also, cute Christmas pillows can make great gifts this time of year for hostess gifts, teachers, service providers, and for Christmas gift exchanges!

Do I need throw pillows on my couch?

Technically, throw pillows are not essential.  However, Christmas pillow ideas like THIS or THIS can really make your entire living space look more cozy and inviting.

At the same time, you may find yourself enjoying your own home a lot more with a few fluffy pillows on your couch.  These Christmas pillow ideas are perfect to help you get comfy for a movie night or even a quick cat-nap during the busy holiday season!  (I mean, there’s always hope for that, right?!  Haha!)

The other reason that I think every sofa needs a few Christmas pillow ideas is that it really elevates the look and design of a space for the holidays.

Pro Tip: Christmas pillow ideas are a budget-friendly way to add color, pattern, and texture.

These three design elements for Christmas pillow ideas can make even a small, simple room feel more intentional and beautiful!

How many throw pillows should be on a couch?

Far be it from me to tell you how many cute Christmas pillow ideas you can have on your couch during this festive season.  However, as a general rule of thumb, three pillows work well for a loveseat or smaller sofa.  Five throw pillows can work for a larger sofa.

For example, here are some combinations I like to use with my Christmas pillow ideas.

Christmas Pillow Ideas for a Loveseat:

For your first Christmas pillow ideas, try adding a matching pillow at each end, either solid colors or a simple pattern, such as gingham.  Then, the middle makes a perfect place to add a novelty pillow featuring different shapes or different colors that coordinate.

For example, a plush Christmas tree pillow is a fun addition.

Christmas Pillow Ideas for a Regular Couch:

First, add two coordinating pillows on each end of the couch.  For example, neutral gingham Christmas pillow ideas at each end with a soft fur throw pillow in solid colors layered in the front provides symmetry.

At the same time, the mix of pattern and color is interesting.  In the middle of the sofa, you could add one or two lumbar pillows (probably 1 is enough, depending on the length of your sofa).

For a little extra fun, try taking a novelty Christmas throw pillow to layer in front of the lumbar pillow.  You can get some fun Christmas pillow ideas HERE for a novelty pillow.

How do you layer throw pillows on a couch?

First, I like to add a larger pillow at each end.  Typically, a 20×20 works great for the end of a sofa.

On my sectional, I often add an even larger pillow, like a large, square euro pillow.  I like the way it looks and best of all, it gets used daily as my family enjoys getting comfy and cozy on the sectional sofa in our living space!

Next, it is a great idea to layer a smaller pillow in front.  A 12×16 can add a different shape while a 16×16 adds the perfect size differential.

Any smaller accent pillows, like a Christmas novelty pillow or other Christmas pillow ideas that are smaller should be layered in front.

How do you coordinate throw pillows on a couch?

These are tried and true tips to help you narrow down all of the beautiful pillow cover options to what fits your home and living room the best.

  • Choose a color palette.
  • Decide on your main color for the space.
  • Decide on how many pillows you want to use in your space.
  • Consider the function of the room and determine the needed durability and washable options.
  • Think about your budget for the room and for your sofa refresh.
  • Consider DIY Christmas pillows based on your time and hobbies.
  • Choose a solid color pillow cover.
  • Choose a patterned pillow cover that coordinates and draws on the main color choice.
  • Add texture with fabric and embellishments, like pom poms or tassel string
  • Mix color and pattern; you don’t have to be totally matchy-matchy!
  • Mix shapes and sizes of your throw pillows.
  • Add seasonal accent pillows.

How do you make throw pillows look fuller?

One of the very best ways to elevate the look and style of your pillow covers is to first choose a pillow insert that is a size larger than your pillow cover.  This allows for the pillow to fully fill the cover.

Secondly, adding an overstuffed down pillow makes a space look more high end.

You can find great down or down alternative pillow insert options HERE that you can use season after season and year after year.  For a very small and reasonable investment, you can elevate the overall look of your living space just by swapping out the pillow inserts!
