As you are planning your Christmas decorations, don’t forget that what goes at the base of your tree is just as important!  Elevate your Christmas tree decor with one of these gorgeous Christmas tree collar ideas or tree skirts for the 2024 season, curated for every style and budget!

The best decor comes down to the thoughtful details you incorporate for each season.  When it comes to Christmas decorating, the base of the tree is just as important as the tree topper!  However, it is a detail that is sometimes not prioritized.  So, today, I’m here to help you dress up the base of your Christmas tree with some beautiful Christmas tree collar ideas along with Christmas tree skirts and other non-traditional options for the perfect finishing touch to your Christmas tree decorations this holiday season!

I guess I shouldn’t assume that you haven’t prioritized your Christmas tree base.  However, the truth is that mine was an unfinished detail for many years.  While there is nothing wrong, AT ALL, with a simple white sheet or table cloth tucked around the base of your Christmas tree, that was the extent of my “perfect tree collar.”

So, speaking from experience, I can say that the base of the tree gets overlooked sometimes!

What can I use instead of a Christmas tree collar?

I’m going to share some gorgeous Christmas tree collar ideas and tree skirt options with you in this post.  However, there are a lot of non-traditional ideas you can also consider.  Actually, a few of these are what I use for most of the Christmas trees in our own home, instead of a traditional Christmas tree skirt.

  1. Vintage woven basket
  2. Vintage wooden shipping crate
  3. Large square antique rice gathering basket
  4. French vintage grape hod
  5. Old galvanized bucket
  6. Vintage French champagne crate
  7. Vintage garden planter
  8. Large gardening urn
  9. Vintage ironstone for small trees

While using pieces from my vintage and antique collections as alternatives to traditional Christmas tree collar ideas is my personal preference, you can use things you have on hand, whether they are vintage or modern.  Boxes, baskets, and other large containers can really add a lot of interest to your Christmas decorations by serving as a DIY tree collar!

Secondly, by using these kinds of items that you already have with your regular home decor, you don’t have to take up extra storage space for a traditional Christmas tree skirt or Christmas tree collar ideas.  Plus, it’s a great way to save some money on holiday decor too!

Do tree collars work for real trees?

The great thing about most Christmas tree collar ideas is that they work perfectly for either a real tree or an artificial tree.  Also, they often fit quite a range of different sizes of trees, which means you can get a lot of use out of your Christmas tree collar ideas for years to come.

Are tree collars in style?

Absolutely!  No matter wether you have traditional styles of home decor or a more modern look, Christmas tree collar ideas or tree skirts are perfect to hide the ugly tree base and give your Christmas tree a really complete look from bottom to top.  I also love that a tree collar or tree skirt makes the bottom of the tree (and the ugly tree stands!) have a more clean look.

Confession?  I also love having something to hide the pine needles that inevitably fall from a live tree!  Haha!

How do I know what size tree collar to buy?

Making sure you have the right size is really important for your Christmas tree collar ideas!  Traditional tree skirts can cover most sizes of tree stands.  However, tree collars can be more specific in size.

You will want to make sure to measure your tree stand.  The height of your tree is not as important as the size of the tree base.  The tree stand should be able to comfortably stand inside the tree collar or whatever container, crate, woven basket, or vessel you are using with your unique touch!

With that being said, I do think that if you have a very tall tree, something more substantial feels more in scale with the overall Christmas tree decor.  That is something to also consider as you choose your Christmas tree collar ideas.

Let’s take a look at a variety of shapes, styles, sizes, and finishes that can all be best options for your Christmas tree collar ideas.  I will also include some tree skirts that I think are so beautiful too.

Pro Tip:  If I put my Christmas tree in a wicker basket or crate, it is still a great idea to put some kind of tree skirt in the bottom of the basket to hide the ugly tree base.

One of my favorite things to use for smaller trees is a large, vintage grain sack.  Remember?  It’s all in the details!

Things to consider for Christmas tree collar ideas:

Before purchasing a Christmas tree collar or tree skirt, or spending a lot of time with a DIY option, you may want to consider these decor elements:

  • What is the size of your tree?
  • Do you have a faux Christmas tree or a real one?  What specific needs are involved?
  • What kind of tree stand do you have and what size is it?
  • What kind of Christmas tree collar ideas will best fit the style of your home?
  • Colors that will blend with your Christmas decor aesthetic
  • What kind or how much texture best fits your decor?
  • Do you need a storage space saving option?
  • What is your budget?
