How should you store extra decorative throw pillows?

Before you can determine the proper pillow storage for your extra pillows and throw pillow covers, it is time to take stock.  Admittedly, I  try to tackle this task when no one in my family is around to point out the obvious: we have a lot of extra throw pillows!  Haha!

Here is a good way to get started:

  1. Gather all of your throw pillows in one place.
  2. Sort by season first.
  3. Next, sort by color and size.
  4. Set aside any throw pillows or extra pillow covers that you no longer use or that do not fit your home aesthetic any longer.  Also set aside any throw pillows that look too worn or have spots/stains.
  5. Remove all pillow covers.
  6. Replace regular pillow inserts with high-quality down or down alternative inserts.  You’ll use these inserts year round and just change the covers as needed, so you want the pillow inserts to be durable!
  7. Determine extra pillow storage needs for pillow covers and decorative pillows that do not have a removable cover.

A good purge combined with taking out all of the existing inserts will dramatically decrease the amount of room you need for extra pillow storage.  At the same time, you will likely be able to store your pillow covers and the remaining decorative pillows in a more proper storage space where you can easily access them too!

Let’s chat about the actual storage space and my own extra pillow storage for pillows and pillow covers.

5 Easy and Creative Ideas for Extra Pillow Storage

1. Invest in quality pillow inserts and pretty removable pillow covers.

Since removable pillow covers are becoming pretty common, this is likely a practical storage solution that you are already utilizing.  However, it is one that I haven’t taken full advantage of until more recently myself.

I love that so many companies now make removable (and washable!) throw pillow covers.  It is so convenient!  I have been guilty, though, of tossing a new decorative pillow onto the sectional after a Target run and ignoring the long-term storage solutions I could put into place ahead of time.

First of all, figure out how many and what sizes of throw pillows you want to have on your sectional, sofa, and/or chairs.  Secondly, consider investing in high-quality inserts to fit the optimal pillow sizes.  At the same time, coordinate with the pillow covers you use the most often to make sure the sizes match up.

Next, put all of the extra pillow inserts that you no longer need into a donation pile.

Then, you’re ready to store away the pillow covers and any remaining decorative pillows that perhaps do not have a removable pillow cover.

Easy Ideas to Store Pillow Covers

  1. If you have extra closet space, try hanging the pillow covers with skirt hangers.
  2. Fold pillow covers with Marie Kondo style, neatly in an extra dresser drawer.
  3. Stack or fold pillow covers neatly into a basket that fits with bed linens in a closet.

2. Use quality zippered bags for pillow storage.

While I do use as many pillow covers as possible, I also need extra pillow storage for some favorite throw pillows that do NOT have removable pillow covers.  I’ve been slowly reducing the number of extra pillows that need to be stored away but I just can’t give them all up!

THESE storage bags are wonderful for extra pillow storage.  I also use THIS size for extra bedding, seasonal blankets, and extra bed pillows since we don’t have an actual guest room.  While THESE storage bags are not vacuum bags, we have found that they do condense the amount of space used for extra pillow storage while keeping me more organized too.

In addition to pillows and bedding, we also keep extra throw blankets, such as chunky knit blankets or faux fur blankets for winter, in THESE storage bags.  They stack nicely in the attic and are not too heavy to move around, which is really helpful!

3. Use pillow storage in plain sight with a wicker basket.

Another great way that I almost always keep some of my extra pillow storage accessible is by storing pretty throw pillows in plain sight.  You can combine a beautiful wicker basket and extra throw pillows to be a lovely decorative accent in the corner of a living room or at the foot of a bed.

At the end of my bed, we have a large wicker trunk that serves as office storage (since we don’t have a home office).  To make the trunk a little more decorative and add a functional, yet pretty, layer, I keep a small, vintage French laundry basket at one end.  In this basket, I store an extra blanket for the bed as well a couple of extra throw pillows.

Depending on the season, I may add one of these throw pillows to the bed pillows.  Otherwise, they add a layer of texture at the foot of a bed while being easily accessible for me to pull out and use around the house.

Besides a pretty basket at the foot of your bed for storage solutions, you could try adding extra pillow storage with a basket under an open coffee table in the living room or on the bottom shelf of a console or sofa table.

If you have pretty pillows that could add pattern and texture to your decor, pull them out of those plastic bins and tuck them into a beautiful basket!

4. A large wicker trunk makes great extra pillow storage.

Speaking of the wicker trunk at the foot of my bed, a wicker trunk is a great place for extra pillow storage.  You may keep extra bed pillows for overnight guests in a small wicker trunk that doubles as a side table in the guest room.

However, you might store extra throw pillows of various sizes in a wicker trunk that also serves as a coffee table in the living room.  Wherever you use them, wicker trunks are a great option for extra pillow storage within easy reach.

In fact, if you need extra space to store any kind of soft goods, such as extra throw blankets or bedding, a wicker trunk in good condition is a great idea!  You’ll want to make sure it is in good condition so loose pieces of the wicker do not catch on fabrics.

Besides wicker trunks, you could also take on more of a vintage look at style your space with a vintage wooden trunk.  Once cleaned and aired out, it can be another great place for extra pillow storage with easy access.

5. Use creative options, like unfilled poufs, for seasonal pillow storage.

Where to put throw pillows when not in use?

Another way that I have started using for extra pillow storage is with THESE leather poufs.  They come unfilled and you can fill them with whatever soft goods you want to store.  This could include extra blankets, throw pillows, extra bed pillows, or even stuffed animals if your kiddos have an abundance!

I was able to take my extra pillow storage out of our hot attic and use these leather poufs instead.  I think it will be a better way to keep my extra throw pillows in good condition since they will be staying in the dry air conditioning.

I ordered THESE leather poufs but there are many different kinds of unfilled poufs you can order to fit your home decor aesthetic!  This can also be a great solution for long-term storage in a playroom or child’s room for stuffed animals.

Or, clear some clutter in a coat closet by storing seasonal coats and winter gear in an unfilled pouf!

There are so many possibilities for storage for every family member in the house with this versatile kind of storage!  For me, these leather poufs are perfect to have easy access for extra pillow storage for my favorite throw pillows!

What to do with throw pillows that you don’t want?

One of the best ways you can keep your extra pillow storage under control is to declutter and clear out extra pillows that you don’t use or don’t want anymore.  At the end of each season is a good time to declutter seasonal throw pillows.

I put nicer throw pillows or pillow covers that I don’t want into plastic bins for a yard sale or donate to our local thrift store.  However, before you get rid of extra throw pillows that you don’t want anymore, make sure to keep any of the inserts that you know you will reuse for some of your pillow covers in the future.

While there are certainly many more creative ways you could find for extra pillow storage, I hope that these ideas inspire you to find the best solution for your extra throw pillows and pillow covers.

Pillow covers are such a fun way to quickly and easily refresh your decor so it is great to have a variety of colors, styles, sizes, and even patterns on hand.  Keeping them organized and clutter-free, though, doesn’t have to be a battle!
