As we will see, simple changes are all it takes to make your home cozy and tranquil for the fall season!
I love all of the seasons and I truly enjoy decorating for each season and even the transitional times between seasons too. Â However, there is something about the seasonal decorating for the autumn season that makes our home feel extra cozy and I always look forward to bringing in cozy home decor ideas for fall!
Whether you enjoy going all out with fall decor ideas or prefer an easy fall decor idea or two that requires simple changes, you can bring in cozy autumn room decor with any of these easy decorating ideas.
How do you make your house cozy in the fall?
When it comes to fall decorating, I enjoy slowly transitioning my home decor from summer to early fall and eventually adding more fall-specific elements into our living spaces. Â Typically, I decorate our main living spaces, including the living room, dining room, kitchen, entryway, and simple accessories in the bedroom.
First, I start by putting all of my summer decorations away. Â Next, I clear each space to create a blank canvas to start decorating for fall. Â Using a neutral color palette, I start adding warm tones, layers of different cozy textures, and elements that add a cozy vibe.
Today, we are going to chat about cozy home decor ideas for fall that take you from transitioning from summer and last all the way until Thanksgiving decorating!

How to Decorate with 21 Easy Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall

Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #1: Warm colors
How can I decorate my home for fall?
After packing up summer decorations and deep cleaning, the first thing I do is to add warm tones in a neutral color palette. Â For example, adding wood accessories and neutral shades of stoneware in my dining room sets a backdrop to add more of the rich colors of autumn hues as we move deeper into the fall season.
There are a lot of different colors you can add for the fall season. Â However, starting with a neutral color palette is a great way to transition from summer to fall and allows you to add touches of your favorite autumn hues throughout the season.
In this dining room space, I will likely add more natural elements with fall colors. Â Dried gourds in rust tones and more leaves in golden tones will bring the fall vibe while being easy to add to the existing decorations.
You may choose to add rich colors like plum or vibrant oranges and reds with pumpkins and leaves. Â For a softer look, you can add cooler tones with blue, green, and white heirloom pumpkins.
Whatever fall colors you decide to add, consider including warm wood tones and stoneware for texture and color!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #2: Soft textures
How to have a cozy autumn?
To enjoy a cozy autumn, soft textures are a must-have for cozy home decor ideas for fall! Â Even if you choose to bring in only minimal fall decorations, you can make your fall living room feel extra cozy by layering some soft textures.
Here are a few simple cozy home decor ideas for fall textures:
- Layer soft throw blankets on the sofa; try adding one with pattern and one solid for visual interest and color.
- Add a soft texture pillow to a sofa or chair. Â THIS pillow is my kids’ favorite!
- Pull some soft blankets out of storage and add to a basket in the family room.
- Add a table runner down the center of the table in the kitchen and/or dining room.
- Layer a soft quilt at the foot of the bed.
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #3: Cozy lighting
How do you make a cozy ambience?
One of my favorite ways to make a living room cozy during the fall is with lighting. Â Even though lighting isn’t necessarily “fall decoration”, the ambience definitely adds a fall vibe to any space.
For me, a cozy living room starts with the soft glow of candles. Â I love using my favorite flameless taper candles on the mantel and also added a flameless pillar candle to a tall glass hurricane and another under a glass cloche.
Since these cozy candles are on timers, they simply flicker on each evening. Â Without any extra thought or effort on my part, our home automatically feels super cozy and ready for the season!
I also enjoy these wireless wall sconces. Â They even work with a remote to make them extra convenient and they also have a dimmer! Â Then, we also added this wireless picture light over our frame TV. Â It is the perfect soft light to elevate the style of the family room!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #4: Cozy throw blankets
One easy way to make your home feel cozy this time of year is to pull a couple of throw blankets out of your linen closet. Â To me, a soft throw blanket is an invitation to sit and get comfy.
If you live in a warm climate, like I do here in South Florida, you may not be ready to pull out a warm blanket, like a faux fur throw, in September. Â However, you can get a cozy vibe by layering light-weight throw blankets. Â
THIS is my favorite smaller throw blanket and THIS one is perfect for a little larger throw blanket that is still light-weight. Â They are super soft and come in a variety of colors to match your home’s fall aesthetic!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #5: Pillow covers
Pillow covers and throw pillows are another fun way to switch up your seasonal decorating. Â My favorite thing about pillow covers is that they don’t take up very much storage space at all so they are an ideal seasonal decoration, even if you live in an apartment or smaller space.
Of course, there are seemingly limitless options for fall-themed pillow covers. Â However, my personal preference is to add throw pillows with autumn hues to my neutral color palette rather than adding a lot of fall-themed covers. Â For example, my sectional this year has pattern and color in warm fall tones without being specific to the season. Â What makes this combination of throw pillows especially cozy for fall, however, are the faux fur pillow covers. Â THESE are my kids’ favorites!
Velvet throw pillows are another great way to add a fall texture with pillow covers while not being necessarily fall-themed. Â I love these burnt orange velvet throw pillows and they are super budget-friendly too!
Pro Tip: Â When you plan your throw pillows, consider layering neutrals with pattern and texture. Â Then, add a pop of fall color or even a fall theme with one or two carefully chosen pillows. Â We love adding THIS pumpkin pillow (again, so fluffy and soft!). You can get a more budget-friendly version of it HERE!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #6: Fall wreath
We’ve chatted about indoor fall decorations but let’s not forget about a welcoming entry space.  Even your front porch and front door can be simply decorated to let family and friends know they are entering a super cozy home!
An easy way to make your front door feel cozy is to add a pretty wreath.  THIS is one of my very favorites.  I used it indoors last year but you could also use it in a covered outdoor space.  I also love the look of THIS fall wreath and have two of them in my cart to add to my own front doors!
Over on THIS post, you can get some decorating ideas for a front porch for the autumn season. Â There area. lot of really creative ways to decorate a front porch for fall but it kind of depends on where you live and, of course, the budget you want to spend.
I don’t do anything too elaborate since it is still so hot here. Â However, I have fun with a simple set up that can last through the Thanksgiving holiday season or until I put Christmas decorations up!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #7: Pumpkin spice
How can I make my house super cozy?
Even if you’re not a coffee drinker, you have to admit that a pumpkin spice scent just sings “cozy fall” as it wafts through your home, right?! Â One of the best ways to make your home feel super cozy is to include all of the five senses as you decorate.
For example:
- Sight: fall colors
- Hearing: soft music
- Taste: pumpkin spice, apple cider, or fall flavor of your choice
- Smell: warm, husky scents like THIS pumpkin clove candle (my personal favorite for fall!)Â
- Touch: warm and soft textures, like a faux fur pillow cover or gauzy throw blanket
We focus a lot on sight and touch with home decorating. Â As you work on making your home cozy for this favorite season, don’t forget about your other senses too!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #8: Faux pumpkins
While we are on the subject of pumpkins, fresh or faux pumpkins can be a really easy way to add instant fall style to any space.
I usually do a slow transition to fall decor and so this means that I don’t really put pumpkins out until they hit my local farm stands. Â However, if you have faux pumpkins that you enjoy decorating with, you can pull those out whenever you’re ready to add fall-themed decor to your cozy living spaces!
One of my favorite ways to decorate with fresh or faux pumpkins is by stacking them or piling them in a large wooden container, like I did with this vintage trough on the dining table.
Even if you didn’t add any other fall decor, you could create a fun centerpiece with pumpkins and make the perfect statement piece to turn your home from “regular decor” into “fall decor”!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #9: Fall stems
Fall stems are one of my favorite decorative accessories to start adding to my neutral color palette as I transition into fall decor. Â There are different things you can use for fall stems, from colorful fall leaves (probably faux leaves since the leaves may not be turning quite yet) to dry or preserved grasses to bare branches.
Typically, I start with some soft greenery and as we move through the season, I replace the greenery with branches of dried leaves that I cut from the trees.
First of all, the branches are FREE and you can’t beat free decor! Â Secondly, I do love the organic look of dried branches.
Over on THIS post, you can get 5 ideas for FREE decorating for the autumn season!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #10: Dough bowl
If you don’t have a dough bowl, you may want to consider adding one to your home decor collection!
Admittedly, I have several wooden dough bowls and I love them all! Â From the smaller ones to the gigantic ones, they are so fun to decorate with. Â In fact, I’ve used them to create some of my favorite looks for fall decorating around our home.
Over on THIS post, you can find 3 ways to decorate a dough bowl in under 5 minutes. Â Remember I said these would be easy tips for creating a cozy home this season? Â You can’t get too much easier than a pretty wooden bowl and 5 minutes of decorating fun!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #11: Warm cookies
Let’s take a quick decor break to remind us of a true comfort food: fresh, hot cookies! I didn’t say they have to be homemade. I didn’t say they have to gourmet (although there might be a box of Crumble cookies on my counter now!). But nothing can beat the warm, cozy vibes of fresh gooey cookies in your kitchen!
Add some (Blue Bell!) ice cream, and let the fun begin! Â
Here’s a quick and easy and yummy recipe from Payton for fall pumpkin cookies. They’re soooo good!
Ok, back to decor ideas to for cozy vibes!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #12: Good book
Since this post is ultimately about “cozy”, I had to include a good book and a cozy reading nook.  Honestly, I haven’t picked up a good pleasure reading book for the fall yet.
However, one of my very favorite books to read in these months leading up to Thanksgiving is One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp. Â I always find it uplifting and encouraging, while challenging me to true gratefulness.
If you’re looking for a book to just browse over a cup of coffee, I recently ordered THIS book for decorating ideas (order a good used copy for a fraction of the price!)Â and I love it so much! Â I’ve been keeping mine on my night stand to help me gather even more cozy ideas!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #13: Brass accents
Brass accents, such as brass candle holders  or figures, are a great way to add a warm tone with a metallic finish.  Personally, I love the antiqued brass look and even just the hint of shine adds a really pretty reflective texture to any vignette.
I especially love adding brass candleholders to my fireplace mantel. Â With my favorite flameless taper candles (HERE), a cozy glow flickers on each evening and is still safe since there is no actual flame!
For the fall and winter seasons, I also enjoy adding vintage or vintage-style brass deer and pheasants. Â It’s a fun way to bring in a touch of nature with a seasonally appropriate decorative accent.
The perfect spot for a pretty brass figure is atop a stack of books, under a glass cloche, or tucked into a vignette on a coffee table tray!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #14: Copper accents
People often ask if you can mix metals when you’re decorating.  I don’t know what the professional interior designers say, exactly, but I know that I mix metals all the time in my own home!
During the fall season, especially, copper accents are a beautiful way to bring in another warm color that is still a neutral. Â Like the brass, copper accents add a subtle and simple reflective texture that gives dimension and visual interest to home decorations!
The kitchen is a popular place to add touches of copper accents. Â If you’re looking for cozy home decor ideas for fall, don’t skip the kitchen!
A simple stoneware bowl on the kitchen island for fruit, copper mugs on the coffee bar, or a copper salt and pepper grinder by the stove can add a beautiful and cozy touch to the kitchen space while still being functional.
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #15: Thrift store finds
Thrifting is one of my favorite things to do and our home is full of secondhand home decor purchases! Â My favorite kind of thrifting is at a vintage market, flea market, or antique mall where there is truly a little bit of everything!
Shopping secondhand is a budget-friendly way to make your cozy home decor ideas for fall come to life. Â The added bonus is that carefully selected treasures for your home create a curated look to your decor style that you just can’t get from a big box store, no matter how high-end it may be!
Thrift stores are also the perfect place to hunt for seasonal decor and items for the holiday season, like a Christmas tree, ornaments, faux pumpkins, and holiday-specific dishes. Â Since you are only using these decorative pieces for a short time, it only makes sense to make the budget-friendly purchases whenever possible!

Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #16: Wall art
Another of my favorite ways to decorate for different seasons, like fall, is by having fun with the wall art in our home.  Most of my walls stay pretty much the same all year round.
However, in our family room, we have one long wall that really takes center stage for our entire open living space, made up of the family room, kitchen, dining room, music room, and entryway. Â This particular wall is visible from all of those rooms and is a focal point.
I have so much fun creating seasonal gallery wall displays over the antique fireplace mantel that sits behind our family room sectional.
If you follow along, you’ll notice that I use many of the same pieces over and over, just arranged a little differently. Â This is a great way to make the room feel fresh and use my favorite cozy home decor ideas for fall without purchasing new decor for every season.
Another great way to change wall art for seasonal decor is with THESE curated collections of vintage-style art.  I have several sets and honestly, I just cannot get over how much they look like real paintings!
At under $20 per set, they are extremely budget-friendly, especially when combined with my thrifted frames!

Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #17: Area rugs and accent rugs
We often think about what we see on the walls in front of us and less about what is under our feet! Â However, a beautiful area rug or even a smaller accent rug can make all the difference in your cozy home decor ideas for fall!
Not only does an area rug give a completely fresh look to the entire space, but it also softens the room and gives it a more cozy feeling.
Also, area rugs and accent rugs are a great opportunity to add a pop of color. Â If you prefer neutrals, like I enjoy, rugs can still add a ton of texture and pattern to add visual interest to a room that is decorated mostly with a neutral color palette.
THIS rug is one of my very favorites.  Even though it isn’t very large and is neutral-colored,  it completely changed the look of the entire space in our back living room area!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #18: Add layers
During the season of autumn, I start adding more layers to my decor.  Cozy accents like extra throw pillows, a throw blanket draped across the arm of a chair, or even layered linens with my table decor bring even more of a cozy feeling to our home.
Fall is the perfect time to add extra layers around your home, just in time for cooler weather too!
Unless, of course, you live in South Florida where it won’t really start cooling down until our friends up north start feeling some winter weather. Â Haha!
However, we keep our air conditioning running and pretend it feels like fall anyway! Â Especially on a rainy fall day during hurricane season, I can quickly become best friends with my blanket again and curl up with a hot drink and good movie on a “fall” Friday evening!
No matter what the temps are outside, you can add light-weight layers, or heavier if that works for you, to help your living spaces feel extra cozy for the autumn season!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #19: Woven textures
While we are kind of on the subject of textures, I have to mention woven textures.  I love almost any kind of woven texture!  Whether it’s a basket hanging on the wall, a placemat on my table decor, or my favorite woven sandals, I just love the look of wicker, rattan, and other woven textures.
Woven textures are one of my favorite ways to decorate because they add a lot of texture to a space. Â At the same time, woven textures are always part of my cozy home decor ideas for fall because they bring in a natural color that blends perfectly with the warm fall tones.
I would have a hard time picking a favorite decor piece for my woven textures. Â However, these large, vintage French grape hods are so fun to decorate with! Â The deep color gives a cozy look to my wall decor and I could layer even more texture by adding homemade corn husk wreaths to each basket to frame out the gallery wall in our family room.
There are SO many beautiful ways to bring woven textures into your home decor! Â Thrift stores and secondhand shopping places are a great place to pick up unique woven decor pieces to use in your home!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #20: Add a pretty centerpiece to the dining table
Some of these cozy home decor ideas for fall take a little more planning and execution.  However, you don’t have to put too much thought into picking up a pretty bouquet of flowers from the grocery store and making a pretty centerpiece to add to your table decor in the dining room or kitchen!
Over on THIS post, I share easy tips for making budget-friendly centerpieces with grocery store flowers. Â You can even use a simple fall flower arrangement on a side table or coffee table to add a pop of color. Â Plus, I think fresh flowers or greenery adds such a thoughtful look to any space in the home.
Pro Tip: Â A thoughtful and intentional home is one of the coziest of all, I think!
Cozy Home Decor Ideas for Fall #21: Add fall scents
Anytime a new season rolls around, one of the most simple ways that I add cozy vibes to our home is by adding seasonal scents.  For example, if you walk into a room or store that smells like evergreen, doesn’t it just immediately transport you to the holiday season?!
A new candle might seem like a little thing. Â However, it is something I treat myself to almost every season because it fills my entire space with a scent that makes me feel like I’m right in the middle of that new season!
For fall, my very favorite is the Pumpkin Spice Clove candle. Truly, one candle fills the entire space of our kitchen, family room, and dining room with the most wonderful scent of the season!
